		<description><![CDATA[The notion of “the umma” — the community of Islamic believers — is often thought to be at odds with modern (post-Westphalian) notions of national territory. Islam, it is said, transcends the geographic boundaries of the nation-state and this may present unique problems for how societies understand and interact with one another. Prof. Matthew Derrick discusses the role of territory in history and how the umma fits into this, taking on scholars such as Samuel Huntington and Bernard Lewis who see a disjuncture between the umma and national territory. Prof. Derrick, a geographer, argues that territory is still important and often trumps transnational religious identity, or is at least a concept that cannot be discarded so easily.

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As the staff at Research on Religion takes a short break to upgrade some equipment and catch up on other duties, please enjoy this &#8220;best of&#8230;&#8221; episode from our archives.</p>
<p>Is the Islamic notion of “the umma” — i.e., the general community of Muslims — consistent with the modern concept of the nation-state and territorial sovereignty?  We discuss this issue with <strong>Prof. Matthew Derrick</strong>, an assistant professor of geography at <strong>Humboldt State University</strong>, and author of “Containing the Umma?: Islam and the Territorial Question” that recently appeared in the <em>Interdisciplinary Journal of Research on Religion</em> (see link below).  Reacting to scholars such as Berenard Lewis, Samuel Huntington, and other scholars associated with the “cultural turn in geography,” Prof. Derrick argues that territory remains an important defining concept in how people organize their life even among religious believers who belong to a transnational faith.  Our discussion starts out with a short detour to Tatarstan where Matthew has conducted extensive fieldwork and he lays out what is unusual about that area within Russia.  He also corrects Tony on his misunderstanding of tartar sauce.  We then move on to a definition of “the umma,” an essential theological concept within Islam that represents the community of all believers.  This raises the question of whether a transnational faith can be squared with the territorial state that dominates our world system.  Matthew takes us on a tour of the issue of territorialism and how it evolved, with the Peace of Westphalia marking an important milestone in how we conceive of nation states in the modern world.  Tony presses Matthew on his more ideational notion of statehood that revolves around issues of sovereignty (e.g., cuius regio eius religio) as composed to a more political economic approach to defining territory based upon the ability to tax a population.  This discussion takes us askance of the religious question for awhile, but it is very important in understanding how modern scholars view the compatability or incompatability of Islam with modern territorial states.  Matthew reviews the thinking of Samuel Huntington and Bernard Lewis who do not see Islam as being compatible with our modern state system and then shares his critiques of these two scholars bringing us to a discussion of how European imperialism carved borders into the Islamic world.  We investigate the rise of pan-Arabism and pan-Islamism, including the attempts by thinkers such as Jamal ad-Din al-Afghani and Sayyid Qutb to craft a general Islamic identity.  Examples of how these attempts have fared are examined including work by the Muslim Brotherhood, the Pashtun movement within Pakistan, the nationalism that seems apparent in the Arab Spring and how Iran has supported Armenia in its conflict with Azerbaijan.  We close by revisiting the area of Tatarstan that has appeared to be able to manage well its regional territory within Russia despite its ethnic and religious pluralism.  Recorded: January 25, 2013.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Are monotheisms better at establishing sociopolitical stability than civilizations with polytheistic religions?  And to what extent do monotheistic civilizations influence the socio-economic development of one another?  In particular, did the Ottoman Empire change the course of European history via its military advances into southeast Europe at a key moment in time?  <strong><span style="color: #003300;">Prof. Murat Iyigun</span></strong>, the Stanford Calderwood Endowed Chair in Economics at the <strong><span style="color: #003300;">University of Colorado</span></strong>, answers these questions and discusses other interesting historical findings that he published in his new book, <em>War, Peace, &amp; Prosperity in the Name of God</em>.  And if that isn&#8217;t enough, Murat &#8212; an accomplished blues guitarist &#8212; treats us to an original &#8220;arabesque blues&#8221; tune at the end of our interview.  Up your knowledge of history with our discussion, and then get down and funky with Prof. Iyigun&#8217;s musical stylings!</p>
<p>Our conversation begins, as usual, with a bit of background about our guest.  Prof. Iyigun explains what cliometrics &#8212; one of his academic specialties &#8212; is and also how he became interested in the study of religion and economics.  He notes that the events of September 11, combined with new advances in institutional economics, prompted him to look into the role that informal cultural institutions play in history.  He also gives credit to his mentor &#8212; Herschel Grossman &#8212; at Brown University for inspiring him to look beyond the typical empirical fare of economics.</p>
<p>We then jump into Murat&#8217;s new book and he lays out the three central questions that he seeks to answer: 1) Why and how did monotheism spread so rapidly and become swiftly intertwined with political authority?; 2) What has been the role of religion and ideology in conflict historically?; and 3) What were the lasting sociopolitical and economic effects of religiously-motivated conflicts?  As for the first question, we walk through Murat&#8217;s empirical study showing that, ceteris paribus, monotheistic civilizations tend to last longer than polytheistic ones and generally have greater territorial reach (a proxy for governing effectiveness).  Tony probes some of the methodological difficulties in measuring these phenomenon and Murat provides convincing answers as to why his study does show a significant effect for monotheism.  He then reviews some of the reasons why monotheisms might be better for obtaining sociopolitical stability, including the ability of ecclesiastics to provide credibility to rulers and lower the discount rate of individuals thus allowing for longer-term policies.</p>
<p>Turning to one particular monotheistic civilization &#8212; the Ottoman Caliphate &#8212; Dr. Iyigun provides some background information about how the Ottomans were able to rise to power and conquer a vast territory, extending across North Africa, into the Arabian peninsula, and eastward towards central Asia.  He discusses the &#8220;Gaza ideology,&#8221; which promotes the basis for an offensive military strategy allowing for conquest, which then becomes its own engine of growth, allowing for a further extension of rule.  The height of Ottoman rule from the mid-15th to the 17th centuries also has an important impact on Europe.  With the Ottomans pushing into the Balkans and close to the gates of Vienna, Europeans had to reduce their own territorial infighting in order to address this external existential threat.  Murat notes that while the Roman Church&#8217;s monopoly had come under challenge prior to the Protestant Reformation (e.g., the Hussites and Lollards), the definitive Protestant break fostered by Martin Luther was catalyzed by the Ottoman threat.   While acknowledging the role of the printing press and other explanations for Protestant success, Prof. Iyigun argues that military advances by the Ottomans forced Europeans to temper their own intra-faith hostilities and conflict, which in turn gave Christian dissenters a chance to take hold and expand on the continent.  His empirical work on the frequency and duration of intra-European conflict compared against Ottoman advances, along with qualitative evidence in the documents of Prince Ferdinand and others, shows this hypothesis to be rather convincing.</p>
<p>We move next to a set of miscellaneous (albeit important) questions about how this may have impacted the different economic development trajectories of the two regions &#8212; Europe and the Middle East.  Tony asks whether the threat of Europe, particularly in the form of The Crusades, might have played a similar galvanizing role in Ottoman economic development.  Interestingly, it does not and Murat explains what happens when the dominant power in the region faces such threats.  He notes three phases &#8212; denial that a threat exists, a conservative revival to &#8220;restore historic greatness&#8221; leading to a reliance on old institutions not suited for a new reality, and then finally emulation of the institutions of the rising power.  We also talk about another interesting facet of his book &#8212; the role of harem politics.  While most of his book is macro-historical, he does devote time to looking into the micro-foundations of military decisions in the Ottoman Caliphate and develops a fascinating thesis.  Here he argues that the nature of dynastic succession relied upon births that were from captured concubines and slave women, often from Christian lands (sometimes as far away as France).  He tests whether the heritage of the mothers of various sultans played a role in determining where military campaigns would take place.  Interestingly, <em>valide sultans</em> (queen mothers) who came from Christian regions (although who also converted to Islam), had an influence in tamping down military incursions into Europe.  While only a side chapter in Murat&#8217;s book, this may be one of the most interesting and surprising findings of his study (at least to Tony, who notes that &#8220;Moms matter&#8221; in history).</p>
<p>Prof. Iyigun finishes off with some broad lessons he learned from his decade-long study of this topic.  He notes that institutional, particularly informal (cultural) institutional, context is very important for structuring political and economic histories.  He also notes that while economic competition in a globalizing world is often viewed positively, cultural/ideological competition should be viewed the same way.  Finally, he learned that in a globalizing world, religion may become a more important focal point for bringing people together than nationalisms, a thesis advanced earlier by Samuel Huntington but which Murat intends to explore further in a more rigorous fashion.  And last, but not least, Murat talks about his love of the blues and how he came to play in the band <em>Barrel of Blues</em>, and then treats us to his own composition &#8212; <em>Muqarnas</em>.  Enjoy!  Recorded: July 8, 2015.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Does the term &#8220;Islamic feminism&#8221; sound counter-intuitive?  <strong><span style="color: #003300;">Dr. Alessandra González</span></strong>, of <strong><span style="color: #003300;">John Jay College (CUNY)</span></strong> and <strong><span style="color: #003300;">Baylor University&#8217;s Institute for Studies of Religion</span></strong>, explores how women in Kuwait are finding new ways to empower themselves and advocate for their interests in an environment where political Islam (or Islamism) is resurgent.  Dr. González begins the interview by noting that our podcast series, which is approaching 150 episodes, is bereft of any discussion of feminism, a fact that Tony notes is correct due to his complete lack of knowledge on the topic.  Alessandra shares how she came to study this topic, which admittedly is one that is not explored deeply and is often misunderstood in the world of academia.  We then review common understandings of &#8220;feminism,&#8221; covering the various waves of this movement from its early incarnation in the West with women&#8217;s suffrage to more current understandings of the term.  This discussion helps frame how feminism is understood in the US and Europe as compared to its incarnation in the Middle East, or Kuwait specifically.  Alessandra notes that few, if any, of her interview subjects considered themselves as &#8220;feminists.&#8221;  This opens the door to a discussion of the Kuwaiti landscape and Dr. González reviews the recent history of Kuwait as it relates to women, noting the influences of British influence, oil wealth, pan-Arabism, the opening of education to women in the mid-1960s, and the surprising influence of the Iraq invasion of the country in 1990.  During this latter event, women proved to be very crucial to the war effort and helped to reshape female roles in society.  We also cover three sources of authority in Kuwaiti society including religious authority (shari&#8217;a law), political authority, and community authority.  These three sources of authority are shown to be in tension, yet provide openings for feminist activism.  With additional discussion on the role of two ideological/theological groups in society &#8212; Islamists and Liberals &#8212; we inch closer to a definition of what it means to be an Islamic feminist.  We then move from a discussion of the role of higher education to the wearing of the Islamic veil (hijab) and how that is not seen as a symbol of patriarchal oppression but a symbol for women who want to assert their religious identity through their own choice.  Interestingly, younger women are more likely to wear the veil than the previous generation, especially after September 11, 2001, a trend that Tony has noticed on his own university campus.  Throughout our conversation, Alessandra illustrates many of the issues she brings up with comments from women and men she interviewed during her various trips to Kuwait.  We then talk more specifically about what Islamic feminism represents, noting once again that this is not a term that many would use to refer to themselves in Kuwaiti society.  The focus turns to three important aspects of the movement including an academic component, the adoption of a comprehensive Islamic worldview, and a need to foster cultural compatability to a society that considers local community and tribal relations to be important.  Tony notes that this seems to be a grassroots movement without specifically-identified leaders as we&#8217;ve seen in the West with individuals such as Gloria Steinem, a contention that Alessandra agrees with and brings more context to.  Alessandra also highlights the important role that men play in this movement as well.  In our closing moments, we share some observations about Alessandra&#8217;s methodology, namely examining what it was like to be a non-Muslim Westerner studying this topic. Dr. González then shares some of the insights she brought back from her most recent visit to Kuwait after publishing her book and what some of the grand lessons she learned throughout the course of her study into this fascinating topic.  Recorded: March 25, 2013.</p>

		<description><![CDATA[The notion of "the umma" -- the community of Islamic believers -- is often thought to be at odds with modern (post-Westphalian) notions of national territory.  Islam, it is said, transcends the geographic boundaries of the nation-state and this may present unique problems for how societies understand and interact with one another. Prof. Matthew Derrick discusses the role of territory in history and how the umma fits into this, taking on scholars such as Samuel Huntington and Bernard Lewis who see a disjuncture between the umma and national territory.  Prof. Derrick, a geographer, argues that territory is still important and often trumps transnational religious identity, or is at least a concept that cannot be discarded so easily.

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Is the Islamic notion of &#8220;the umma&#8221; &#8212; i.e., the general community of Muslims &#8212; consistent with the modern concept of the nation-state and territorial sovereignty?  We discuss this issue with <strong><span style="color: #003300;">Prof. Matthew Derrick</span></strong>, an assistant professor of geography at <strong><span style="color: #003300;">Humboldt State University</span></strong>, and author of &#8220;Containing the Umma?: Islam and the Territorial Question&#8221; that recently appeared in the <em>Interdisciplinary Journal of Research on Religion</em> (see link below).  Reacting to scholars such as Berenard Lewis, Samuel Huntington, and other scholars associated with the &#8220;cultural turn in geography,&#8221; Prof. Derrick argues that territory remains an important defining concept in how people organize their life even among religious believers who belong to a transnational faith.  Our discussion starts out with a short detour to Tatarstan where Matthew has conducted extensive fieldwork and he lays out what is unusual about that area within Russia.  He also corrects Tony on his misunderstanding of tartar sauce.  We then move on to a definition of &#8220;the umma,&#8221; an essential theological concept within Islam that represents the community of all believers.  This raises the question of whether a transnational faith can be squared with the territorial state that dominates our world system.  Matthew takes us on a tour of the issue of territorialism and how it evolved, with the Peace of Westphalia marking an important milestone in how we conceive of nation states in the modern world.  Tony presses Matthew on his more ideational notion of statehood that revolves around issues of sovereignty (e.g., cuius regio eius religio) as composed to a more political economic approach to defining territory based upon the ability to tax a population.  This discussion takes us askance of the religious question for awhile, but it is very important in understanding how modern scholars view the compatability or incompatability of Islam with modern territorial states.  Matthew reviews the thinking of Samuel Huntington and Bernard Lewis who do not see Islam as being compatible with our modern state system and then shares his critiques of these two scholars bringing us to a discussion of how European imperialism carved borders into the Islamic world.  We investigate the rise of pan-Arabism and pan-Islamism, including the attempts by thinkers such as Jamal ad-Din al-Afghani and Sayyid Qutb to craft a general Islamic identity.  Examples of how these attempts have fared are examined including work by the Muslim Brotherhood, the Pashtun movement within Pakistan, the nationalism that seems apparent in the Arab Spring and how Iran has supported Armenia in its conflict with Azerbaijan.  We close by revisiting the area of Tatarstan that has appeared to be able to manage well its regional territory within Russia despite its ethnic and religious pluralism.  Recorded: January 25, 2013.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A week before the 10th anniversay of the September 11th terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, <strong><span style="color: #003300;">Prof.</span></strong> <span style="color: #003300;"><strong>Monica Duffy Toft </strong></span>of <strong><span style="color: #003300;">Harvard University&#8217;s Kennedy School of Government</span> </strong>joins us to discuss what we have learned about religiously-motivated violence over the past decade.  This podcast represents our second discussion on the book <em>God&#8217;s Century: Resurgent Religion and Global Politics</em> (co-authored with Daniel Philpott and Timothy Shah), the first being focused on the role of religion in promoting democracy.  Our attention here turns to why religious groups and individuals would be prompted to violence.  The discussion is far-ranging, looking not only at Islamic terrorism, but includes an examination of the Irish Republican Army in Northern Ireland, Hindu nationalism in India, and the influence of Buddhism on the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka.  Prof. Toft provides definition of terrorism and &#8220;informal violence,&#8221; the latter which encompasses such &#8220;spontaneous&#8221; events as ethn0-religious riots.  She argues that looking at, and including, informal violence in the analysis of terrorism is crucial for understanding the phenomenon of religiously-motivated violence.  Prof. Toft lays out her explanation for the increasing salience of religious violence, focusing both on institutional factors such as how states regulate religious organizations and the importance of political theologies.  The confluence of these institutional and ideological factors helps explain why religious terrorism and civil war has increased since the 1970s.  Our conversation also considers the recent rampage of Anders Behring Breivik in Norway.  We also discuss the role of religion in civil wars such as Sudan, Yugoslavia and other parts of the world.  Prof. Toft finishes the interview with her thoughts on whether religious violence is likely to subside in the future.  Recorded: August 29, 2011.</p>

We begin the interview with a historical survey of how church-state relations have changed over the past two or three millenia, a broad sweep of history indeed, but one that is crucial to understanding why religion has made such a strong comeback in recent decades.  Prof. Philpott shows how early in human history religious and secular authority split apart and how both types of leadership existed in a situation of mutual dependence &#8212; secular leaders required the legitimating endorsement of religious leaders, whereas religious leaders relied upon the material support of secular rulers.  During the early modern period (c. 1450-1750) this mutual balance began to tip in favor of secular rulers who exercised greater control over religious groups in a paternalistic manner.  Interestingly, this was a global trend.  Beginning in the late 1700s, particularly with the French Revolution, we witness a global trend where religion is subjugated (and sometimes decimated) by secular rulers, particular in communist and socialist nations.  Ironically, this subjugation gave religious organizations a greater degree of independence from secular government in some parts of the world that allowed new political theologies to develop and the institutional ability to organize against secular rulers.   We discuss the formation, nature and influence of these political theologies, from the ideas promoted at Vatican Council II to Hindu and Buddhist nationalism to Islamic fundamentalism. In some areas such as Latin America, Indonesia, and parts of Asia these new political theologies and resurgent religious organizations helped to promote democracy, whereas in other parts of the world (e.g., the Middle East) it has led to less sanguine outcomes.  Our discussion also touches upon the role of ideas in motivating human events, and we finish the discussion with some thoughts on the 2011 &#8220;Arab Spring&#8221; and whether or not that this will result in more democratic nations.  This is the first part of a discussion of the book <em>God&#8217;s Century: Resurgent Religion and Global Politics</em>.  We will be focusing on the issue of religious violence with one of the other authors of the book in an upcoming episode.  Stay tuned.  Recorded: July 7, 2011.</p>

We explore the connectcions between seemingly small violations of religious liberty and religious persecution. 				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span style="color: #003300;"><strong>Roger Finke</strong></span> &#8212; professor of sociology and religious studies at <span style="color: #003300;"><strong>Penn State University</strong></span> and director of <strong><span style="color: #003300;">The Association of Religion Data Archives</span></strong> &#8212; takes us on a journey around the globe to discover how and why religious persecution arises in some nations but not others.  Based on his book <em>The Price of Freedom Denied</em> (co-authored with Brian Grim), Prof. Finke makes the argument that religious liberty is a vital component of all civil liberties in society.  He makes the case that small violations of religious freedom (often in the form of seemingly innocuous regulations) can open the door to an erosion of other freedoms and invite various forms of religious persecution.  We detail some of these regulations focusing on the importance of registration requirements for religious groups.  Also, Roger challenges an interpretation of Samuel Huntington&#8217;s &#8220;clash of civilizations&#8221; theses, claiming that it is not the presence of two different religious cultures within a nation that automatically gives rise to conflict, but rather the various laws that regulate different faith traditions that sets the table for whether or not conflict (and persecution) will arise.  We pepper our discussion with examples from France, Russia, China, Japan, Iran, Nigeria and the United States.  In closing, we discuss one of Roger&#8217;s most valuable contributions to academia &#8212; The ARDA.  Far from being just a clearinghouse for religious databases, this website offers the public the opportunity to explore religion around the world in a remarkably user-friendly interface.  Listeners are encouraged to give it a try!  Recorded: December 16, 2010.</p>
